Prabhat, Vice President (Marketing) at Sterling Electric Ltd., a reputed multinational, faces continuously declining sales; his once top-contributing division desperately needs a big government order; London HO pressures him; the Executive Director reprimands his poor performance. He assures them of a special Ministry of Defence contract for a secret installation near Gwalior. Failure may close his division and cost his lucrative job; personally he is the single earner with school/college children, an ailing mother, heavy education/medical expenses and a housing EMI default risk. Then his secretary introduces Subhash Verma, a candidate for Manager — technically sound, experienced, well-versed in tendering — whose CV came through the Defence Minister's office. Verma offers copies of rival Unique Electronics Ltd.'s bid documents for the next day's Defence tender in exchange for employment — a win-win letting Sterling outbid and win the hefty order. Prabhat is stunned: accepting solves all problems instantly, yet Verma brazenly stole his own company's papers. (a) Discuss the ethical issues involved. (b) Critically examine Prabhat's options. (c) Which is most appropriate and why?
