Briefly explain the process of tide formation and differentiate between tides and waves.
Introduction

Main Body
Process of tide formation:
According to the equilibrium theory by Newton,
Types of tides based on celestial position:
(i) Neap tides and spring tides are monthly tides that are caused due to position of earth, sun, and moon.
(ii) Syzygy in conjunction => The moon is in between the sun and earth => tides of highest magnitude and amplitude.
(iii) Syzygy in opposition => The earth, sun, and moon form a right angled triangle => tides of lowest amplitude and magnitude.
Difference between tides and waves:
Tides: (1) Neap tides and (2) Spring tides are monthly tides that are caused due to position of earth, sun, and moon.
Waves: (1) Atmospheric-oceanic phenomena.
Thus, tides and waves are important for vertical and horizontal movement of water.
