Introduction

The Quit India movement started with Gandhi's mantra of 'Do or Die' on 9th August, 1942.

People's movement → saw the wide-scale participation of various sections of society:

1Peasant group from Awadh, Bihar and Bengal.

(ii) Participation of student and youth organizations → provided organizational support.

(iii) Inclusion of businessmen, represented by AIIOCHAM and FICCI.

(iv) Workers' movement, as seen in Kolkata, Bombay, Ahmedabad etc.

However, it was the women's leadership that left a clear mark.

1Usha Mehta → ran an underground radio station.
2Sucheta Kripalani and Aruna Asaf Ali, led movements of Gowalia Tank.
3Matangini Hazra, led a procession of 5000 women.
4Sarojini Naidu, provided a asked role for asserted leader, gave speeches and mobilized the masses.
5Nandini Sabi, led marches and organized civil disobedience.

Thus, Quit India movement can be considered as an anomaly as it provided wide-scale resistance, against British rule, after the failure of Sippl mission.
