Contingency theory a recent phenomena in organization theory in discipline of public Administration.

Before CT, classical theories focussed on universalism of approach in organisation, behavioural theories rejected this & founsed on psychological aspect. Finally Systems-theory came up with impact on environment & context.

Contingency Theory is continuon of same says that, no structure or method can work effectively in all situations & context.

Burns & Stalker came up with 'mechanism tic & organic organisation, for stable & unstable environment respectively.

James Thompson in CT came up with 'organisation in action' & suggested type of organisation asper work they do. (g) → Mediating, long-linking, etc

Mintzberg called for accomadative organisation.

This contingency theory believe in change in organisations structure & process follow as per demand of context ie work they do, technolgy era they are in & environment mgt work in.
