Discuss the role of the National Commission for Backward Classes in the wake of its transformation from a statutory body to a constitutional body.
Main Body
The National Commission for Backward Classes was constituted as a statutory body after Mandal case study court in 1998. Later it was accorded the status of a constitutional body, under Article 338 B. Examining constitutional & legal safeguards for SEBC: Functions of NCBC → Dispute resolution and inquiries into complaints → Participation in socio-economic policy making etc. Role of National Commission for Backward Classes 1) Accorded the same status to SEBC, as scheduled castes and scheduled tribes → constitutional backing. 2) Earlier, it only had the power of inclusion and exclusion of castes, now it can participate in socio-economic development.
